With Bruce Ellington out for season, 49ers’ face major questions at receiver

While the quarterback competition receives more attention, the 49ers’ thinning receiving corps might be a bigger issue.

Wide receiver and return specialist Bruce Ellington has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring tear, the team announced Tuesday. It is yet another blow to perhaps the 49ers’ weakest position group. After a strong showing in training camp, Ellington was expected to start at slotback between outside receivers Torrey Smith and Quinton Patton.

The most likely candidate to replace Ellington is Jeremy Kerley, whom the 49ers brought in from Detroit this week.
