SANTA CLARA — Neither defensive end Arik Armstead nor guard Laken Tomlinson is worth a 2019 salary over $9 million, so don’t expect the 49ers to exercise either player’s fifth-year option by next Wednesday.
General manager John Lynch didn’t outright say that when he had the chance this week. But it’s the logical answer.
Armstead and Tomlinson have had up-and-down careers as 2015 first-round picks by the 49ers and Detroit Lions, respectively. Neither is a bust, neither is a $9 million-salary All-Pro, and neither is assured a starting spot this season.
