The 49ers are both 21 years and 38 miles removed from the last time they started the season 3-0, back when future Hall of Famers Steve Young and Jerry Rice were still turning Candlestick Park into their personal playground.
Just like in 1998, the 49ers today find themselves one of the NFL’s seven unbeaten and untied teams after three weeks. That’s probably where the comparisons between this year’s version of the 49ers and the one in ’98 end, though.
