The San Francisco 49ers have already made overtures towards getting both younger and cheaper along their defensive line heading into 2019. Most recently, the Niners elected not to pick up a team option on veteran nose tackle Earl Mitchell, meaning he’ll be a free agent and two-year pro D.J. Jones will get the nod as the primary starter this upcoming season.
It wouldn’t be a surprise, however, if more offseason cuts and moves are made between now and training camp.
One name to watch here is fellow defensive tackle Sheldon Day, whom the 49ers claimed off waivers when the Jacksonville Jaguars let him go back in November of 2017.
