San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and running backs coach Bobby Turner have a knack for grabbing running backs late in the NFL Draft.
True, the Niners’ 2017 experiment with former Utah tailback Joe Williams in Round 4 didn’t pan out. But Shanahan and Turner made up for that gaffe by grabbing Matt Breida as an undrafted free agent last year.
And all Breida did was post 814 rush yards while finishing fifth best among qualifiers with an average of 5.3 yards per carry in 2018.
Breida is a lock for the 2019 roster, and so is the team’s prized free-agent acquisition from last year, Jerick McKinnon, who missed his 2018 campaign with a torn ACL.
