SANTA CLARA — A rash of injuries early in training camp sent the 49ers into familiar territory. Wounded players piled up in coach Kyle Shanahan’s first two seasons, and history was repeating itself with Year 3 approaching.
Down went Dee Ford, Nick Bosa and Jason Verrett, their most alluring additions to upgrade the pass defense. Fortunately, these weren’t season-ending injuries, not like Jerick McKinnon’s a year ago that robbed the 49ers of their new offensive toy.
