Trent Williams explains why he's content playing for 49ers without new deal

Trent Williams joins the 49ers on an expiring contract.

There’s only one season left on an extension signed with Washington back in 2015. A new deal, at least a commitment to complete one, seemed requisite to acquiring the elite left tackle in trade, but that wasn’t the case.

The 10th-year veteran didn’t demand the big-money deal with significant guarantees before Saturday’s trade to the 49ers for a 2020 fifth-round pick and a third rounder from 2021 was fully executed.

49ers general manager John Lynch said Saturday that both sides were content to slow play the prospect of a new deal.
