The 49ers are exhibiting some creativity and logic under new coach Jim Tomsula. Whether that has a benefit in September remains to be seen. However, the Tomsula decision to move the team’s rookie minicamp back a week shows awareness and a clear-headed stewardship.
Nearly all teams, eager to see their rookie class, conduct mini-camp right after the draft. Instead, Tomsula brought the team in for a week but didn’t start practices until a week later. His reasoning? Players need to acclimate to their new surroundings and make sure they have medical clearances before hitting the practice field.
Often, players have something come up in their physicals that need extra attention.
