HOUSTON – After an offseason trade to acquire his services, Blaine Gabbert was all but assured control of the 49ers’ backup job behind Colin Kaepernick when training camp opened.
Gabbert got off to a rocky start in the exhibition season when he completed just 3 of 11 passes for 20 yards and an interception against the Baltimore Ravens. He completed fewer than 50 percent of his passes and finished with a 54.0 passer rating. He still was named the backup, and then he solidified his status during the regular season when he attempted only seven passes.
Gabbert apparently showed the 49ers enough behind closed doors in practices during the regular season to receive a two-year, $4 million contract to re-sign with the 49ers.
