Before he became a veteran San Francisco 49ers reporter, Matt Barrows was a fresh-faced Northwestern grad who had just accepted a journalism job in South Carolina. But as he took in the surroundings of the Palmetto State during his 12-hour journey from his home in Northern Virginia, he came to a disturbing realization.
“Gosh, if I got bumped off on one of these tiny roads, and the guy who bumps me off shows up for work the next day, they’re not going to know the difference,” Barrows, now a senior writer at the Athletic, recalled to SFGATE last week.
