With one slip of the tongue, head coach Kyle Shanahan might have already made a mess for the 49ers this offseason.
During his press conference with general manager John Lynch on Wednesday, Shanahan told reporters that offensive assistant Klay Kubiak has done such a great job this year that “he’ll get the official title, which he more than deserves” of offensive coordinator next season.
Shanahan added that the promotion is “recognizing what he’s already been doing and doing at a high level.” However, his announcement was an illegal one.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported Friday that the team will now go back on what Shanahan said and “do an open search for their OC position,” as, if the decision were official, it would mean they had circumvented league hiring rules.
