The 49ers plan to release tackle John Theus later today, a league source said. The move presumably is being made to make room on the roster for an inside linebacker.
Theus was a fifth-round draft choice last year who started one game in 2016 and who backed up Joe Staley at left tackle for most of the offseason. He was inactive for Sunday’s game against Carolina. Garry Gilliam served as the top backup at both right and left tackle.
Meanwhile, linebacker Reuben Foster is expected to miss multiple games with a high-ankle sprain. ESPN reported on Tuesday that two inside linebackers, Sean Spence and Donald Butler, worked out in Santa Clara this week.
