Darnell Dockett’s stay with the 49ers was short one.
The former Arizona Cardinals defensive end was a surprise release, as the 49ers worked to get their roster down to the NFL maximum of 53 players before the deadline at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The 49ers informed Dockett on Friday he was released, a source confirmed.
Dockett, 34, who missed all of last season with the Cardinals after sustaining a torn ACL in training camp, signed with the 49ers shortly after the Cardinals released him in the offseason. The 49ers guaranteed $2 million of his two-year, $7.5 million contract.
