Source: 49ers plan to hire Shane Day as QBs coach, replacing Rich Scangarello

The 49ers intend to hire Shane Day as quarterbacks coach, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area on Sunday.

Day, 44, is expected to replace Rich Scangarello, who served two seasons as 49ers quarterbacks coach before leaving to accept the offensive coordinator role and play-calling responsibilities for the Denver Broncos under new head coach Vic Fangio.

Mike LaFleur will remain as passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach, while Mike McDaniel stays in his role as run game coordinator. LaFleur coached the quarterbacks last week at the Senior Bowl.

Coach Kyle Shanahan, who also works a lot with 49ers quarterbacks, wanted a separate assistant to work exclusively with quarterbacks because he often pulls LaFleur and McDaniel out of meetings to work with him on offensive issues and projects, a source said.
