Sorry, 49ers fans: Why Malcolm Smith’s iconic interception never should have happened

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers visit the Seahawks on Sunday, marking the first time Richard Sherman will be back inside CenturyLink Field since he was released by Seattle in March.

Naturally, 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was asked Thursday about his favorite memory of Sherman when the two were both in the Emerald City.

“Well, there’s plenty. I guess one of the last ones, the tip where Malcolm (Smith) intercepted it,” Saleh said. “Sorry Niner fans.”

Ah, yes, perhaps the defining moment of the 2013 NFC Championship game, where a Colin Kaepernick pass intended for Michael Crabtree in the Seahawks’ end zone was batted by Sherman back to Smith with 22 seconds left in the fourth quarter.
