A jury convicted Anthony Becker, an outgoing Santa Clara councilmember and failed 49ers-backed mayoral candidate, of perjury on Thursday for lying under oath about leaking a grand jury report that criticized his and other councilmembers’ relationship with the NFL team, according to multiple reports.
The jury of 10 women and two men found Becker guilty at the county’s Morgan Hill courthouse after only three hours of deliberation. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 31 from Judge Javier Alcala, who oversaw the trial. Becker faces fines and up to four years in jail for one felony charge of perjury, for lying under oath about being the source of a leak, and a misdemeanor charge of failing to perform an official duty.
