The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly shored up their defensive coaching vacancies, promoting Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator and hiring Brandon Staley as an assistant head coach and likely defensive assistant.
But according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the 49ers had dreams of reeling in a bigger fish.
“Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has received a huge amount of praise for his coaching performances that helped the Chiefs win another title. Though he recently signed a new contract to stay with the Chiefs, the 49ers were trying to land him, according to a league source,” wrote Russini on Saturday.
