Two of the most important moments in the history of the San Francisco 49ers franchise came when the team hired Bill Walsh to be head coach, and when the team drafted Joe Montana in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft. It turns out the latter decision was not quite a slam dunk until shortly before the draft.
Longtime NFL coach Sam Wyche served as the passing game coach early in Bill Walsh’s career with the 49ers. Wyche is an entertaining personality, and he recently had a fun appearance on Peter King’s podcast. The whole thing is worth a listen, but he had a Joe Montana story at the ten minute mark I thought was worth pulling out.
