In the middle of his 11th season with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Steve Spurrier is reportedly retiring as head coach.
Spurrier's retirement is effective immediately. According to The State, an interim head coach will be named Tuesday.
The 70-year-old was a standout quarterback in college at Florida from 1964-66. He won the Heisman trophy in his final season, and the 49ers used the No. 3 overall pick in the 1967 NFL Draft on Spurrier.
He spent nine seasons in San Francisco, serving as a quarterback and punter. With the 49ers, he started 26 games at quarterback, posting a 13-12-1 record while completing 441-of-840 passes for 5,250 yards, 33 touchdowns and 48 interceptions.
