Report: Ex-49ers tackle Jonathan Martin, 25, will retire

Former 49ers tackle Jonathan Martin, 25, a standout at Stanford who was a second-round pick in 2012, is retiring from the NFL, the NFL Network reported.

In his lone season with the 49ers last year, Martin started nine games in place of right tackle Anthony Davis. He was waived in March and claimed off waivers by the Panthers. Martin’s retirement was reportedly prompted by a back injury that would have forced him to miss the season.

The 49ers acquired Martin from the Dolphins for a seventh-round pick in 2015. Martin left Miami during the 2013 season because he was subjected to locker-room bullying, most notably from fellow offensive lineman Richie Incognito.
