Rebuilding teams and nearly 31-year-old running backs don’t seem like an ideal match, but the 49ers might think differently.
Seeking to add depth behind Carlos Hyde, the 49ers will host New Orleans’ Tim Hightower on Thursday, ESPN reported.
Hyde, Mike Davis and Raheem Mostert are the only running backs on the roster. Davis, a 2015 fourth-round pick, has averaged 2.0 yards on 54 career carries. Mostert, a 2015 undrafted free agent, has one career carry. Running backs Shaun Draughn and DuJuan Harris are unrestricted free agents.
The 49ers are clearly in need of proven backups, which makes their interest in Hightower, who will turn 31 in May, more understandable.
