In a move that counts as a mild surprise, the 49ers have released cornerback Chris Cook, 28, four practices into training camp, the Houston Chronicle reported.
The 49ers re-signed Cook – the No. 34 overall pick in 2010 – to a one-year deal in March. In 2014, Cook played in six games before a hamstring tear ended his season in October.
The 49ers’ cornerback corps is headlined by Tramaine Brock and Shareece Wright and includes three 2014 draft picks: Dontae Johnson (fourth round), Keith Reaser (fifth) and Kenneth Acker (sixth). Reaser and Acker are looking to make their NFL debuts after they were sidelined by injuries last year.
