On the 49ers’ first offensive possession of the fast-paced, no-huddle Chip Kelly era, they had an incomplete pass, a 1-yard run and another incompletion in the preseason opener against the Texans.
Result: punt.
Time of possession: 50 seconds.
Call it foreshadowing.
As many predicted, Kelly’s hurry-up attack was ill-suited for a team with subpar offensive personnel who couldn’t stay on the field. Kelly eventually adapted and slowed the pace in the midst of a 2-13 regular season, but his tardy response was telling.
He didn’t make major changes to a shotgun-only offense that doesn’t use a fullback and employs three wide receivers on the majority of its snaps.
