One 49ers intern will serve as team's first female coach

Katie Sowers, an intern with the Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship program, will serve as the San Francisco 49ers' first female assistant coach this summer.

Sowers and seven other interns have track records of coaching stints at other teams and in some cases, playing competitive football. Sowers, for instance, played quarterback for the Kansas City Titans, a Women's Football Alliance team. She also served from 2012-2016 as the Athletic Director for Kansas City's parks and recreation department and most recently, she spent time with Atlanta Falcons, in a similar internship role and then working nine months as a scouting intern.
