On this date, April 24: 49ers acquire Steve Young, quarterback of the future

By CHARLES BRICKER, Mercury News Staff Writer
Steve Young, the millionaire quarterback with the proletarian tastes and stuttering career, was traded on Friday by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the 49ers, where he will become the heir apparent to Joe Montana.

The deal will cost the Niners second- and fourth-round picks in Tuesday’s NFL draft.

Bill Walsh, coach and president of the club, also agreed to have the 49ers pick up the final $666,000 in deferred signing- bonus payments due Young from the whopping contract he signed with Tampa in 1985.

Despite all the money he has made in the last four years from both the Los Angeles Express of the USFL and the Bucs, the high life has somehow escaped the 25-year-old quarterback.
