According to Comcast, the reason thousands of Oakland residents are unable to watch the NFC championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams is that someone fired multiple bullets early Sunday morning and struck an Xfinity fiber cable.
A Comcast spokesperson told Bay City News that gunfire near Eastmont Mall in East Oakland damaged the company’s equipment. Comcast hoped to have service restored by 2 p.m., a full hour and a half before the start of the game, but since revised that estimate to 7 p.m.
“Certainly this circumstance on game day could not be any more distressing to us and our customers,” said Comcast California spokesperson Joan Hammel.
