Meaningless TD on final play of 49ers-Cardinals had big gambling implications

At their own 22-yard-line with just two seconds remaining, it was clear the Arizona Cardinals were too far for a Hail Mary pass to try to beat the 49ers.

Instead, they were forced to opt for the classic lateral play to overcome their four-point deficit, which almost never works out, but shows they at least cared enough to keep trying until the final whistle.

It also opened the door for surely thousands of bettors who thought the Niners would win by a good margin Sunday at home against the NFC West’s worst team.

They were saved by this play, which gave the Niners a 10-point win:

49ers closed -10

The Niners opened as 14-point favorites over Arizona, but the public bet the line down to 10 points in several major sportsbooks, including MGM and William Hill, according to VegasInsider.
