The Northern California chapter of the NFL Alumni Association is asking for the public’s help after the organization was scammed out of more than $27,000 in a phishing scheme.
Several volunteer members with the NorCal chapter spoke to SFGATE about the loss Friday, one day after KPIX-TV first reported on the lost funds.
“It’s been devastating to us,” NorCal chapter marketing director Dave August told SFGATE. “It’s been a big hit and it hurts our kids a lot.”
According to chapter treasurer Russ Spencer, a fraudster digitally disguised as a vendor that NFL Alumni NorCal was working with on a regular basis requested that the NorCal chapter send a wire transfer instead of a check.
