Longtime 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward converted from safety to nickel this past season. That, everyone agrees on. How he got there, though, is proving contentious.
Back in February, Ward said that head coach Kyle Shanahan threatened to bench him if he wouldn't play in the slot.
At the NFL combine last week, GM John Lynch laughed that off.
"Kyle doesn’t remember it quite like that," Lynch said, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. "We were never benching Jimmie. I think he more tried to sell him on why it was a good thing for him and our team.
