Two years ago, linebacker Malcolm Smith was a key free agent signing. On Tuesday, the 49ers decided to release him. Malcolm signed a 5 year deal in 2017, but he missed the entire 2017 season through injury. Last season he played 12 games, but never quite stood out and the team is looking to go younger. His release signals the team is happy with the young linebackers on the team especially Dre Greenlaw. Malcolm’s spot was filled by the signing of WR Nick Williams.
