On Tuesday, the Niners traded a position of surplus for a position of need. The team agreed to a deal with the Patriots to trade TE Asante Cleveland for OL Jordan Devey. There was speculation that the Niners with their surplus of tight ends would receive calls from around the league. Most predicted that the Washington Redskins would be a good candidate with their immediate need for one. That trade could still happen because the Niners still have a surplus.
In getting Devey, they help add competition for the offensive line, which looks like their weakest position group.
