Last Tuesday, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters 31-year-old veteran tight end Garrett Celek recently had back surgery and would be out at least until the start of 2019 training camp, perhaps longer.
It’s bad news for a player already on the weaker side of the roster bubble heading towards the regular season.
Celek, whose 2017 efforts under Shanahan earned the “Celek Time” moniker, was unable to replicate those numbers again last season. In total, Celek amassed a mere five receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while 41 of those yards came on just a single play.
