From the archives: Bill Walsh’s awkward return to the 49ers

(This column was originally published in the Contra Costa Times on Jan. 24, 1996)

SANTA CLARA — Unable to beat them, the 49ers upstaged Super Bowl dance partners Dallas and Pittsburgh on Tuesday, trotting out George Seifert, Bill Walsh and Carmen Policy for a spirited round of “What’s My Line?”

Seifert (patriarch? ventriloquist’s dummy?) was seated conspicuously at the center of the dais and clearly in control, with Policy (bean counter? haberdasher?) on his right and Walsh (distinguished professor? aging comedian?) on his left.

It was much ado. The place, in fact, was ankle-deep in ado.
