Tony Sparano, the longtime NFL coach with ties to both Bay Area teams, died unexpectedly on Sunday at the age of 56.
The Minnesota Vikings announced Sparano’s death in a statement that did not provide a cause. Sparano had been Minnesota’s offensive line coach since 2016. Before that, he spent a season as the 49ers’ tight ends coach in 2015 and two seasons on the staff of the Raiders, including as interim head coach for 12 games in 2014.
