Four years after the San Francisco 49ers traded everything but the kitchen sink to select quarterback Trey Lance No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, it appears Lance could already be out of the league. A month before the draft, the Niners dealt their 2021, 2022 and 2023 first-round picks, as well as a 2022 third-round pick, to the Dolphins to move into the top three and make an ill-fated selection of the North Dakota State product, who played just one full season in college.
Lance would struggle mightily in San Francisco — both with injuries and production on the field — eventually losing backup duties to Sam Darnold in 2023 and getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys, where he similarly was relegated to third-string quarterback duties.
