Ex-49er told owners at secret meeting, ‘We let (Kaepernick) become Public Enemy No. 1’

According to a report published by the New York Times on Wednesday, NFL owners and players convened an “extraordinary” meeting at the league’s New York headquarters last October to address the incendiary reaction to players’ silent protests during the national anthem.

It was decided players and owners would alternate seats around a large table bearing an NFL logo, the Times reported. “Let’s make sure that we keep this confidential,” commissioner Roger Goodell said. How do we know this? The meeting was recorded and wound up in the hands of the Times.

It was a time of crisis.
