In the wake of the Colin Kaepernick controversy, former A's outfielder Eric Byrnes shared a photo of a different brand of athlete/activist. Byrnes posted a picture of his late friend Pat Tillman, the former Leland High star who gave up his NFL career to become an Army Ranger. Tillman died in Afghanistan in 2004.
Along with the photo, Byrnes tweeted: "Country is far from perfect but #istand for those who don't just talk about making it better."Asked to elaborate via e-mail, Byrnes responded with an impassioned essay entitled "Why I Stand."
