The 49ers signed outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil to a two-year contract in June, but the deal was basically this: Prove you can still play this year and we’ll keep you for a second season.
That is, the second year of Dumervil’s contract is an option year, meaning the 49ers can choose to not exercise the option and part ways with Dumervil after the season without financial penalty.
On Wednesday, Dumervil, 33, was asked about the option: Did he expect the 49ers to keep him in 2018?
“That’s beyond my pay grade,” Dumervil said. “I just try to come out and do what I can do.
