'Brock Purdy Rule' will let NFL teams carry third QB next year

Christian McCaffrey's days at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers may very well be a thing of the past.

The NFL approved a rule Monday that would allow teams to dress a third quarterback without using a spot on the game day active roster. Teams do need to put the third QB on their 53-man roster, and they can play the No. 3 QB for injury reasons only.

The Niners dealt with this exact issue in the NFC championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles back in January. Both starting quarterback Brock Purdy and backup QB Josh Johnson were injured during the playoff game.
