SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers do not need to get a decision from defensive lineman Justin Smith before the NFL Draft, general manager Trent Baalke said on Friday.
Smith, a 14-year veteran, is contemplating retirement. But that’s OK, Baalke said, because the 49ers have been preparing for Smith’s departure.
“Numbers-wise, we feel very good about where we’re at,” Baalke said on Friday.
The 49ers signed free-agent Darnell Dockett this offseason after the Arizona Cardinals released him. Ian Williams and Glenn Dorsey, neither of whom played last season, are expected back from injuries.
The 49ers selected defensive linemen Tank Carradine and Quinton Dial during 2013 draft.
