The San Francisco 49ers open their preseason slate on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. against the Kansas City Chiefs. It's setting up to be a predictable affair, as far as these exhibition games go: the starters will barely play, talented youngsters will get a bunch of first-half reps, and then the roster long-shots will finish out the second half.
That applies to the quarterback position, too: Jimmy Garoppolo will play a series and then hang out on the sideline as No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance gets his first NFL action all the way through the second quarter. Lance receiving more playing time than Garoppolo doesn't mean he's usurped Jimmy G on the depth chart — just that he needs more reps and their starter doesn't, really.
