A week after quarterback Colin Kaepernick said he’ll donate $1 million, his team will match it.
The 49ers have pledged $1 million to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation to address social inequities, the team confirmed. ESPN first reported the team’s donation. The news comes a week after Kaepernick pledged to donate the first $1 million he earned this season to charities to assist underserved communities.
On Wednesday, Kaepernick said he’ll also donate the proceeds he receives from his top-selling jersey. Kaepernick’s jersey sales have soared since his decision to not stand during the national anthem became a national story that inspired reaction from President Barack Obama and caused other athletes to follow him.
