The San Francisco 49ers will release John Theus on Wednesday, according to a report from Matt Brarows of the Sacramento Bee. Theus is listed as the primary backup at left tackle, and was the first player in the game when Joe Staley suffered an injury in the third preseason game.
But Theus was inactive for Sunday’s Week 1 opener against the Carolina Panthers, meaning Garry Gilliam served as the primary backup at both tackle spots. Gilliam has shown flashes of high-level play at times, so I wonder if he was simply behind on the playbook in the preseason or something along those lines.
