49ers sign linebacker while Foster finishes suspension, others hurt

SANTA CLARA — Another former Seattle Seahawks linebacker is apparently joining the 49ers. Terrence Garvin is arriving ahead of this Sunday’s home opener for a 49ers unit, a league source confirmed Wednesday morning.

The 49ers needed depth while Reuben Foster finishes his two-game suspension, and to help cover for Brock Coyle (concussion) and Malcolm Smith (hamstring), both of whom played for the Seahawks before Garvin’s 2017 season there.

Smith was inactive for Sunday’s season-opening loss at Minnesota, and once Coyle left in the fourth quarter with a concussion, Elijah Lee replaced him. Mark Nzeocha, who started at strong-side linebacker, has the versatility to play inside, too.
