Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the San Francisco 49ers are signing former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Trent Sherfield. The 6’1”, 219-pound receiver was undrafted out of Vanderbilt in 2018.
Sherfield played 80 snaps on offense for the Cardinals last season and 220 on special teams. He split time both inside and out but played a career-high 34 snaps in the slot during Week 17 for Arizona.
Most of Sherfield's playing time came as he covered kicks, punts and played on both return units. Sherfield has one punt return in his career. Garafolo said Sherfield has a chance to win the WR3 job now that Kendrick Bourne is gone, but that is a lot of projection for a player who hasn’t accomplished much of anything in the NFL.
