The San Francisco 49ers continue their veteran purge. The team is releasing safety Craig Dahl, according to a source. I could not get a second confirmation on this, but Matt Maiocco is now reporting it, so I figure it is safe to run with it. The move clears $650,000 in cap space, and the team will carry $883,334 in dead money. That dead money comes from $433,334 in prorated signing bonus, and $450,000 in a salary guarantee.
Even before the releases of Darnell Dockett and Philip Wheeler, this release would not have been a surprise. While Dahl is strong on special teams, the 49ers have a lot of young safety depth.
