49ers report card: Defense rescues shaky Garoppolo, offense

TAMPA, Fla – Here is how the 49ers graded in their 31-17, season-opening win Sunday at the Buccaneers:

PASS OFFENSE: C

Jimmy Garoppolo’s 39-yard touchdown pass to Richie James was a captivating way to take the lead. Other than that, it was a rocky performance. Garoppolo could have led his receivers a little better and obviously shouldn’t make an annual tradition out of season-opening pick-sixes. George Kittle is far and away his best target (eight catches, 54 yards, two touchdowns nixed by penalties). Kendrick Bourne and Marquise Goodwin had passes, albeit innacurate ones, bounce off their hands and should have been caught, coach Kyle Shanahan said.
