The 49ers, a team in the beginning stages of a major rebuilding project, have released linebacker Ahmad Brooks, 33, an 11-year veteran who is their longest-tenured defensive player.
Brooks was not in attendance at a team meeting or practice this morning. The 49ers officially released him just before 1 p.m. after attempts to trade him were unsuccessful.
Brooks (53.5 career sacks) and Elvis Dumervil (99) were the only players on the roster with more than 20 career sacks. Brooks ranks third in franchise history in sacks and is tied for second in postseason sacks (6.5).
Brooks was replaced by Eli Harold, 23, in the starting lineup for last week’s preseason loss against the Broncos.
