The brief experiment that was veteran defensive tackle Darnell Dockett’s tenure with the San Francisco 49ers is now over.
Dockett, who signed a free-agent deal with the 49ers this offseason, was released the day after San Francisco’s final preseason game versus the San Diego Chargers. NBC’s Pro Football Talk was first to report the story.
The 49ers brought Dockett in over the offseason to supplement the loss of veteran defensive end Ray McDonald. McDonald had been dismissed from the team last December in the wake of numerous off-the-field incidents.
It was also thought that Dockett would provide some insurance in case fellow DE Justin Smith decided to retire.
