Backup quarterback Thad Lewis started to put himself into consideration for the San Francisco 49ers QB depth-chart consideration during the Niners’ opening preseason game versus the Houston Texans last Sunday.
Unfortunately for Lewis and the Niners, the backup QB suffered a torn ACL in the third quarter of San Francisco’s 24-13 loss, per Adam Schefter of ESPN and Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the injury is expected to keep Lewis out for all of 2016.
The Niners signed Lewis to a one-year deal during the offseason, and Lewis was expected to be a quarterback who understood head coach Chip Kelly’s offense.
